Since 1984, the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus has been making beautiful music and providing excellent training to young singers. Founded by Bruce Pullan, former Artistic Director of the Vancouver Bach Choir, the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus was created as special project of the Bach Choir to provide a high-quality choral opportunity for children, with a strong emphasis on vocal pedagogy and music education. Over the years the organization has thrived and expanded, adding many more levels of choirs and rehearsal locations. Over the VBCC’s 35 year history, we have also recorded several CDs and toured extensively through Europe and North America.
Bruce Pullan, former Music Director of the VBCC, was educated as a Choral Scholar at King’s College, Cambridge and New College, Oxford. He came to Canada in 1974. In addition to his position as Music Director of the Vancouver Bach Choir from 1983 – 2010, he conducted the major choral repertoire with numerous major Canadian orchestras. He was Head of the Department of Music at Western Washington University from 1975 to 1993; President of the Vancouver
Academy of Music from 1993 to 1997; and Professor and Head of Choral Music at the University of British Columbia from 1999 to 2009 when he retired as Professor Emeritus. In 2008 he was appointed to the Order of Canada.
The birth of the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus is also intrinsically linked to the energy, incentive, and passion of Joyce Maguire. In addition to co-founding the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus in 1984 and acting as its Manager for 24 years, Joyce was also an extremely accomplished pianist, playing as the accompanist for the Vancouver Bach Choir for 42 years. When Joyce passed away in 2008, Vancouver lost a tremendous spirit. Her love of music, her respect for children, her tireless work ethic, and her wry sense of humour will continue to live on in the VBCC.
Marisa Gaetanne joined the organization nearly 20 years ago as a conductor for our Piccolo and Junior Choirs. Showing great skill, talent, and enthusiasm for working with young voices, the VBCC has been greatly enriched by Ms Gaetanne’s exceptional contribution through the years. Upon Mr Pullan’s retirement in 2009, we were proud to see Ms Gaetanne take the helm as our new Artistic Director. She currently the artistic director for the VBCC and conducts the Chorus, Chorales and Toccata choirs.
